Among Twitter’s 175M registered users are tons of businesses, ranging from micro-enterprises to the Fortune 500. Twitter can be an effective part of your search strategy IF you take these three simple steps.
Instead of going straight to the job board talk first to your family and friends. Put your feelers out and ask if they have heard of job openings or if they are open to asking people in your network. Getting an interview through word of mouth and having a name to drop can give you an edge on your competition.
Because I’m still unmarried at 37 I’m definitely not an expert at landing a job as Wife (despite responding to numerous ads, putting my “profile” online and going on many first, second and third “interviews” i.e. dates over the years), however, I have landed jobs consistently since I was 16. Hence the reason why I’m a career coach and not a matchmaker. But I’ve got to say that people’s complaints in their job search are the same ones I, and my friends, grouse about concerning men.
Find out what period of the year each company will be most favored to do more business. Most companies in the Nigerian Stocks Exchange do more business during specific periods of the year or are affected by certain seasonal events e.g. a sub-sector like Building materials and construction will be most impacted during a period a heavy construction project like when the National Stadium was constructed in Abuja a few years ago.
Again it sounds like they are just trying to be friendly and get to know you but this is yet another question that they are not legally allowed to ask. However, they can ask you if you are authorized to work in a certain country. Most companies will advertise on the job posting if they are willing to accept a Visa or Sponsorship.
The Nanny Search – Both families should get together and write a job description, work agreement and qualities they are looking for in a nanny. They should agree on how the nanny search will be executed and determine responsibilities for each step of the way. If an agency is used: the fee amount, who pays it, and any fee-splitting arrangements should be in writing. If an agency is not being used, make sure you agree on a process for screening, background checking, and reference checking. During the interview process, the nanny should have the opportunity to meet all parties before accepting the position.
No real job. Even with companies going to job fairs, these aren’t always representative of something with a job attached to it. Job Fairs are often done to support community efforts and companies that show up are sometimes there for PR, not because they have any openings.
Only resend your resume to a recruiter when you want to apply for a different position at a company. Otherwise, you should e-mail or call to follow up. This should be your game plan for landing that job.
